With ongoing diversification in the energy industry and increased international visibility, a new corporate identity was needed to represent the ambitions and attitude of Norway’s largest company.
Although Statoil had a competitive edge and a strong position in Norway, they were relatively unknown compared to the largest global energy companies. Operating in 42 countries it was essential to create a strong and relevant brand expression that represented the unique qualities of the company, and also differentiated with a distinctive and instantly recognizable identity.
History and nature have shaped Statoil as a company – learning to perform under extreme conditions in order to cross new energy frontiers and lead the way forward in the industry. This link to nature was fundamental in the new brand expression with the identity being inspired by the star constellations in the northern skies. Hinting at Statoil's Nordic heritage the star symbolizes a leading light within the industry reflecting the company’s highest aspirations, continued focus on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and work towards effective new energy solutions.
With its distinctive use of colour the identity is a courageous statement that represents Statoil’s unique attitude and is also highly differentiating in the global landscape. The solution is an identity that is a clear statement that the world can still look towards the north to discover future energy solutions.
SDG was responsible for the creation of the new visual identity platform with full implementation across all relevant touch-points, from print and digital applications, to signage and branded environments, giving a truly holistic brand experience.
